The Importance Of Osteopathy For Babies & Children

The skull of a new born is vulnerable as the bones have not fused together. Very often, these bones have been affected by birth compression and trauma and do not sit in their true alignment. This can cause areas of tension in the cranium.

By adjusting and releasing these tensions, cranial treatment has a great deal of success in helping with a wide range of conditions.

The following may be responsible for symptoms in babies:

  • Long birth – prolonged compression

  • Distress during birth process

  • Cord around neck

  • Forceps/Ventouse

  • Abnormal birth position- breach/face presentation etc.

  • Caesarian

Symptoms may include:

  • Irritability and excessive crying

  • Sicky baby

  • Poor Sleeping

  • Poor feeding

  • Symptoms of Colic

  • Asymmetry of skull bones

  • Eye infection/blocked tear duct

  • Recurrent ear infection

Mothers and fathers often bring their young sons or daughters after they have complained of being uncomfortable or in pain. Normally these symptoms in children are related to trauma, growing pains, poor posture at school or too much time on computers or gaming consoles!

What To Expect From Your Consultation & Treatments

On your first visit we will take a detailed medical history and listen to your concerns. Then a careful examination will be carried out followed by specific treatment for your injury or health problem.

You may find one treatment is enough to unlock certain injuries, however generally patients need between 2 – 6 sessions. Some patients feel they benefit from regular treatment once a month or every six months, it is up to the individual.

The initial appointment lasts for around 1 hour which includes taking your medical history, an examination and then treatment. Follow up appointments are for 30 minutes.
